Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Centre (AFBMTC) is a state-of-the-art, specialized centre for blood and bone marrow stem cell transplantation, unique not only in the Armed Forces but in whole of the Pakistan. In addition to stem cell transplant, it also provides specialized care for patients with various blood disorders including blood cancers. The centre provides haemopoietic stem cell transplant facilities to serving armed forces personnel, their families and the civilian population. The hospital carries out 60 - 70 transplants per year. Till June 2014 more than 600 bone marrow transplants have been done with results comparable to the best transplant centers of the world. It is also worth mentioning that the present cost of bone marrow transplant at AFBMTC is about 2 million RKR compared with 15 to 25 million abroad. The Centre is a purpose-built facility with 25 beds, out of these, 6 beds are in a specially built transplant section equipped with facilities of laminar air flow and barrier nursing. The hospital has a small dedicated laboratory, facility for freezing stem cells and machines for separating stem cells and various components of blood. It also has a small operation theater where stem cells from bone marrow are harvested under general or spinal anesthesia.
