This is the second course in machine shorthand. This course
emphasizes reviewing the Phoenix theory on the shorthand machine as well as to
continue to increase speed on the shorthand machine. The student will be required to
take timed dictation on the shorthand machine and then transcribe on a keyboard utilizing
all the skills of a good transcriptionist. Good skills in grammar and spelling are
necessary for success in this course.
Shorthand is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases speed and brevity of writing as compared to longhand, a more common method of writing a language. The process of writing in shorthand is called stenography, from the Greek stenos and Shorthand is a term for the abbreviations and other words used in chat rooms, e-mail, message boards, Internet, and other text-based messaging devices. For example, LOL, which is short for “laugh out loud” is an example of shorthand.
A stenographer is a person who makes a written verbatim record using a unique shortened writing style called “steno” on a steno machine. Steno is “written” on the machine using a special theory that is based on syllables, rather than letter by letter, as is done on a typical keyboard.

Teeline is the most popular shorthand system and is a key feature of the majority of NCTJ-accredited journalism courses. Achieving a shorthand speed of 100 words per minute (wpm) will improve your employment prospects and is essential if you want to progress to the National Qualification in Journalism (NQJ) news pathway.
This course covers the fundamental study of Gregg Shorthand. Shorthand is a lifelong personal skill which relieves one from the drudgery of writing longhand. Shorthand makes it possible for most people to write three to four times faster than in their longhand speed. It aims for a thorough knowledge, understanding, and correct application of the fundamental rules through reading, writing, and transcribing of shorthand notes. Shorthand is something of tremendous value, but it can only be acquired through reasonable and honest effort.
