s Early Childhood Education Diploma is issued when a student has completed all three
certificate programs – the Basic Early Childhood Education Certificate, the Infant/Toddler Educator
Certificate and the Special Needs Educator Certificate. This enhanced qualification allows students to
meet the developmental, social and cognitive needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and children with
special needs.
The main goal of this course is to introduce students to early childhood education with emphasis
on historical perspectives, theories, practice, and current trends and developments. Early childhood
environments for children from birth through eight
Supervised teaching of children in a lab school or community setting, applying what has been learned through
coursework and previous lab experiences. Students will take on the role of a lead teacher for a portion of the experience as
well as work closely with the parents and other staff. In collaboration with the cooperating teacher, students
will plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate activity lesson plans, which will be used for portfolio development. Seminar will serve as an open forum to self-assess, discuss, and reflect what has been learned from student teaching experience.
Explore early childhood education curriculum theories and pedagogies, child development, health and wellbeing, professional studies
as well as teaching and learning with the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course students will be able to:
Explain the roles of the early childhood education professional;
Describe critical issues facing children and families today;
Explore contemporary issues in early childhood education curriculum, teaching, and methods;
Examine the Timeline of the early childhood education historical figures, their beliefs and theories
from Martin Luther (1524) to Montessorians around the world celebrate 100 years of Montessori education.
Discuss the influence of the past history of early childhood education on the future direction of the profession;
Identify and explain the main philosophical and pedagogical principles of the Montessori program;
Explain the importance of Piaget theory of cognitive development;
Compare and contrast the similarities, differences and strengths of ECE models;
Explain the similarities and differences among preschool, kindergarten and primary grade children;
Evaluate the issues and trends in children’s behavior guidance;
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities using Connecticut Preschool Curriculum
Framework performance standards (CTPCF);
Identify and explore the NAEYC Standards with their supporting skills.
Discuss the implications of diversity on early childhood education; evaluate issues
relating to teaching children with special ne
