A study of HEV (hybrid electric vehicles) and EV (electric vehicles). Safety procedures will be strongly emphasized. Vehicle systems that will be covered: Hybrid safety and service procedures, introduction to hybrid batteries and service, introduction to hybrid electric motors, generators, and controls, regenerative braking systems, introduction to hybrid vehicle transmissions and transaxles, hybrid vehicle heating and air conditioning, first responder safety and procedures, introduction to manufacturer scan tools, hybrid vehicle diagnostic trouble codes.
Hybrid cars often provide higher miles per gallon (mpg) than standard gasoline engines. They’re different than electric cars because they don’t run entirely on electric power. Aside from the fuel economy, hybrid cars offer a more affordable and more accessible way for consumers to reduce their carbon footprints. Famous hybrid cars include one of the originals, the Toyota Prius, the Ford Fusion Hybrid, and the Honda Insight.
A comprehensive program on Hybrid Electric Vehicle Design, Analysis and Simulation using a variety of computational tools for HEV.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the academy, participants will be able to:
Define and analyze fundamental electrochemistry of battery operation and performance requirements for HEV, PHEV, EREV and full electric vehicle applications
Estimate the size of a cell to meet a specific requirement
Create a cradle-to-grave, or cradle-to-use list of materials used in any type of automotive battery
Compute the temperature response of battery cell and pack assemblies for a simple model
Describe the functions performed by a Battery Management System (BMS)
Explain different approaches to estimating state of charge, state of health, power and energy
Apply the operation of brushless dc and induction motors to HEV and EV vehicles
Define the torque speed curves for motors and the application to electric and hybrid electric vehicles
Describe the features of buck, boost, and Transformer converters
Compare and contrast the various industry and regulatory standards for hybrid vehicle components, batteries, and charging systems
Describe the main hybrid and electric vehicle development considerations and performance requirements for various vehicle system
Identify how to define key vehicle system requirements and select and size system components that best meet those requirements.
The coursework provides advanced knowledge and hands-on labs in the design, analysis, control, calibration, and operating characteristics of HEVs. Whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student, you can integrate any number of these courses into your degree. Another flexible option: simply take courses as a non-degree seeking student.
Upon completing this course, you will understand:
Hybridization levels and types (micro, mild, full, plug-in, and extended range hybrid vehicles, and battery electric vehicle)
Driving cycles and fuel economy test methods
Traction motor and generator choices and pro’s and con’s
Critical concepts such as field weakening and fault tolerance
Traction drive power electronics and dc/dc converters
Batteries and supercapacitors for traction applications
Battery management and battery-charging systems including wireless charging
Vehicle dynamics, driving cycles, and torque and power performance requirements
Subjects such as new wide bandgap switching devices (SiC and GaN) for traction applications
Turbo and super charging using electric motors
