I am very disappointed with Dr. Shariff Hashwani. On January 2017, I had gone through a Cataract Surgery just after 9 months, very recently one of my nerve got raptured and the fluids started to flow out, now my vision is becoming dim as well as black spot and hairy lines are appearing right beside my cronea (centre) of the eyes. Now although I have been given the medicine by Dr Shariff Hashwani's assistant doctor Ali, but I am not satisfied. So please, please before deciding to operate for Cataract Surgery please choose the best doctor or see the review for your own safety.

Dr Irshad Haider handled my case, when i was tired of consulting almost every eye specialist of UAE . My left eye cornea was effected due to accident and it was dissolving slowly, due to which my right was bearing all the pressure and i started loosing eye sight...but Dr irshad made a medicine using olive oil that resulted in not only maintaining eye sight but also cured the wound of my cornea...

My father in law has Glaucoma and has lost 50% of his vision due to a procedure that he underwent at Hashmani Eye Hospital. On his first consultation, Dr Sharif Hashmani assured my father in law that though he would not be able to restore his lost vision he could preserve the vision that he still had (according to topography test this was barely nothing in left eye and 25% in his right eye). After prescribed drops failed to control my father in laws eye pressure within 2 weeks of treatment, Dr Hashmani said he would perform a laser procedure and upon my request wrote the name of the procedure as, "trans scleral cyclo photo coagulation" or TPSP. What is important to mention here is that Dr Hashmani, and later his marketing manager, assured us that this procedure would involve a few pricks to control the fluid made by the eye thus keeping eye pressure in control. DR HASHMANI repeatedly assured us that there would be NO SIDE EFFECTS and NO POST OPERATIVE CARE. His marketing manager confirmed this. The laser procedure was conducted on 18/3/17 at Hashmani's Eye Hospital in Gulistan-e-Jauhar by Sharif Hashmani (my husband requested that Dr Sharif Hashmani conduct this procedure). The procedure was delayed by 2 weeks as we were told the machine was under repair. Before undergoing the procedure, when my father in law asked the attendant whether he would be able to read when he went home he was assured he would be able to do everything and the procedure was done at 1 pm that day on my father in law's RIGHT EYE - his only good eye even though my father in law suggested to the doctor to start with the left eye. After the procedure we were alarmed and completely unprepared for the incredible amount of pain and nausea my father in law experienced until 8 pm that night. We were unable to speak to the doctor and were advised anesthesia drops. What was EVEN MORE DISTURBING was that my father in law could see about 10% of what he could see before the procedure. Obviously alarmed, we contacted an eye specialist who conducts eye surgeries for Hashmani's Eye Hospital. He told us that it is normal for patients who undergo TPSP to experience vision loss and it takes about 3 weeks for it to come back. He also said patients can also experience permanent vision loss through this procedure. An internet search also clearly revealed that "28% of patients experience vision loss after undergoing this procedure." We were referred to an eye specialist who is considered the authority on glaucoma in Karachi. Upon hearing about the procedure that my father in law undergone, the first thing she said was, "its a very painful procedure" and acknowledged the collateral inflammation and compromised vision as a likely outcome of this last resort procedure to control eye pressure. Obviously upset that the hospital did not disclose any of these risks. I revisited Dr Sharif Hashmani on 20/3/17 informing him that he had not warned us about any kind of vision loss or even the pain or after effects of surgery bur rather made it seem like a very minor and harmless procedure. He told me, and I quote, "you cannot experience vision loss from this procedure." He also said, "there should not be any pain after this procedure." So at the moment, my father in law has about 50% of the limited vision that he had in his right eye because Dr Sharif Hashmani and the staff at Hashmani hospital were not forthcoming infact rather misleading about the procedure as well as its after effects. Needless to say we are upset with the doctor and hospital's unprofessionalism and lack of ethics but more than that helpless and frustrated because there is nothing we can do at the moment to give my father in law his lost vision back. My reason for posting is so that the hospital and doctor are aware of the consequences of their misinformation, and that other patients are careful before agreeing to any procedure just because they feel they can trust the doctor.

Dr Jawaid Niazi operates here. He is the teacher of most of the eye surgeons in Karachi.
