The Diploma in Hotel Operations (DHO) has been
designed to meet the needs of applicants considering entry into
operational positions within the hospitality industry. This
comprehensive program provides the students with a broad practical
understanding of hotel operations management. The supervisory
level of the employees is considered as the backbone of hospitality
operations. A combination of theory and practical, DHO equips the
students with the skills and knowledge to undertake supervisory

Additional demands for managers are expected in suite hotels. Business customers are willing to pay more for rooms with kitchens and suites that are spacious enough to conduct small meetings in. Other trainee and managerial opportunities will be

This course is designed to prepare students for entry level employment in the hospitality
industry through exploring the scope of the industry and its relationship to travel and
tourism, examining hotel and lodging operations, including specialized segments of the
industry. Industry leaders and businesses are profiled and students will be exposed to
the variety of occupations within the field and introduced to tools for measuring financial
results. Integrated throughout this course are career preparation standards, which
include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving,
workplace safety, technology, and employment literacy.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES:
Graduates are expected to fulfil the following objectives after 5 years of graduation:
• Competent hotel professionals who synthesize and apply the knowledge,
understanding and laboratory experiences to provide quality products and services to
government agencies and hospitality industries.
• Professionals in hotels who lead and engage in teams in problem solving across
disciplines through effective communication abilities.
• Professionals in hotels who continue to advance their knowledge and abilities by
utilising ICT to explore business opportunities in the hospitality related industry.
• Professionals in hotels who practice ethical and professional values in providing
services to the recipients and provider of hospitality industry.
The Diploma of Hotel Management (Year 1) provides you with an overall perspective of business processes and fundamental skills relating to the hospitality and tourism industries. The units you will study are designed to enhance your learning experience, and provide you with the underpinning knowledge necessary to prepare you for further studies at university level. This program is taught on ECU’s state-of-the-art Joondalup Campus West.
The program consists of 8 units of study and can be completed over 2 or 3 trimesters, and provides opportunities for scaffolded learning
and the development of core academic and employability skills.
