Called before going to get my 7 month baby's ears pierced. The guy said its not recommended but they will do it. On reaching, staff were highly rude and uncooperative and I had to be stern to get my job done (I'm a doctor btw and their reasons for not getting a baby's ears pierced were pathetic). Very sad. EDIT - In response to reply I got, 1. Keloid formation is rare and in fact one study showed are likely to develop if piercing is done after the age of 11 rather before. 2. Infection is rare and depends on post-care as well as the shop/place doing the piercing. If a boy's CIRCUMCISION procedure can heal (which is a bigger invasive procedure than a piercing) then why won't a small earlobe piercing? Instruments should be sterilized as well (Again depends on the shop. And disappointed to note the person doing piercing didn't even wear gloves) 3. Allergic reaction is highly rare and haven't been consistently linked to piercing as a baby. It can happen at any age. Parents know more about their baby and would inform prior. For kids with allergies, use 24-karat medical-grade gold-plated studs. You will never have a reaction to pure gold. 4. Choking hazard...the jewler should provide proper tops and not earrings. Common sense for both sides involved. 5. Tearing? Depends on the jewler, so keep professional staff who can do such procedures expected in a jewelry shop. And again, provide tops and not hoops etc. Why piercing is recommended at early age? 1. Babies have lower number of nerve endings, hence lesser pain. The smaller the baby, the lesser the pain. Indeed, my baby was ok after an hour. 2. Babies have less sense of coordination so chances of touching the piercing is low to none. This means less trauma, no scarring or keloid. 3. Age 2 months is arguably an ideal time to get your baby’s ears pierced because it coincides with the first round of vaccinations.
