It's surprising that even though the vast majority of patrons have endorsed this restaurant, my family and I do not feel the same way after having our Sunday dinner there. We were looking for a soothing and pleasant atmosphere and ambiance. Having never been to Thyme before we read about the positive words on its outdoor seating and decided to try out the place. We were rather surprised to find the restaurant nestled between a dhaba chai shop playing loud Punjabi music and an apartment garage entrance upon a pot-holed road riddled with passing traffic which included trucks, rickshaws, motorcycles, etc. Which is not the background ambiance music you would want in a high-end restaurant setting. The quaint little outdoor seating area was cordoned off with fairly lights and wooden fencing. We tried the bread basket offerings while I looked around our general seating area. A pole mounted transformer hummed precariously above our heads, spewing God knows how much electromagnetic radiation. Perhaps intending to keep the food warm? Not the relaxing setting I had anticipated. Still, we thought at least the food would be worth the exorbitantly-priced menu. I'm sorry to report that it wasn't. Everything we ordered from the menu arrived bland - the Crispy Butter Chicken from their specials menu could have passed for any number of other chicken dishes. It had no taste of its own. Besides, it wasn't crispy, didn't have a buttery taste or aroma, and had no hint of "sweet undertones" as advertised. Sure, it tasted passable, and we ate it, but nothing stood out - it lacked any flavor, it was soppy and had no texture, no top acidic notes or deep undertones of sweetness. Nothing. The Blowtorch Shrimps sounded exciting so we had ordered that as well. Again, the same bland non-flavor sauce which was similar to the goop they had lathered over the "crispy" butter chicken. Only difference was that the waiter after serving it held a torch to each of the four shrimps as if to justify the name of the dish: four shrimps held up to a blowtorch for five seconds. Who could argue with that? The only saving grace was the Penne Arrabiatta which thankfully met general comparable standards - but charging more than double and merely scraping by in comparison to the other penne arrabiattas available in local restaurants is, quite frankly, sad. On a brighter note, the service was nice. The staff was pleasant and knowledgeable and polite. Everything else was just not something I would want to experience again. Nevertheless, Thyme has a loyal customer base and I wish them well. I hope they can take this review and perhaps think to better their taste profile. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back to see if they have.
