I'm writing to tell you about my experience today at Turkish consulate Karachi. I had my appointment for submitting documents at 12pm. It is mentioned on your website to reach 15 mins prior which i did. Surprisingly your staff on gate didn’t even let me go inside, instead he told me to go to gerry’s travel agency and submit my documents over there. I even showed him my appointment which I got from your website and it clearly mentions date, time and Turkish consulate general Karachi address but still he kept saying to go to gerry’s. It’s alright if you have appointmented gerrys at your official travel agency but they showed alteast mention it somewhere on your website. This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable.

Why not Turkey is a visa free country. Since , we consider them our great ally and Muslim brother. But, they give free visa to US citizen pathetic.

My paper was selected for a conference in Istanbul, Turkey. Ticket, accommodation and conference travel was completely sponsored by a Turkish authority. When I applied for visa with more than three weeks before the conference, the visa officer took the documents and the fee (Rs 7,000+). On the day of delivery, I was given passport without visa and the staff misbehaved without giving any chance to know the reason. Upon calling the Turkish sponsor, they told that a minor confusion in documents caused them to refuse the visa. The same information was not communicated to me. They instead ask me to reapply with new fees only a day before the conference. If they had instead asked me that simple clarification at the time of submitting documents or at anytime when they were processing my application, it will have enabled me to visit and attend the conference. More importantly, it will have saved more than thousand USD which the conference organizers in Turkey spent on ticket and accommodation. It also affected their program since I was scheduled to present in a 45-min long session on opening day. The staff needs to be humane and especially, the academics need to be treated humanly and with respect. At the end of the day, the money lost and the program affected did not belong to me or owned by me. But, despite my best efforts to come to Karachi for visa from a different city of Pakistan, it was a very painful experience indeed. I was told that the process for the visa application takes one month for people belonging to country of my citizenship. Unfortunately, there was no other option mentioned to me. The ticket and accommodation was sponsored by a National organization in Indonesia and this slow process hurt their finances more than mine. Academic conferences do not give all supporting documents one month before conference. So, there shall be some way to support academics rather than making them helpless at the end of the day which also damages the conference, finance and is a win-win situation for nobody, especially if the sponsors spending money on our accommodation and tickets are local authorities in Indonesia.
