5/ 5

INTRODUCTION The Virtual University, Pakistan’s first University based completely on modern Information and Communication Technologies, was established by the Government as a public sector, not-for-profit institution with a clear mission: to provide extremely affordable world class education to aspiring students all over the country. Pakistan’s first University based completely on modern Information and Communication TechnologiesUsing free-to-air satellite television broadcasts and the Internet, the Virtual University allows students to follow its rigorous programs regardless of their physical locations. It thus aims at alleviating the lack of capacity in the existing universities while simultaneously tackling the acute shortage of qualified professors in the country. By identifying the top Professors of the country, regardless of their institutional affiliations, and requesting them to develop and deliver hand-crafted courses, the Virtual University aims at providing the very best courses to not only its own students but also to students of all other universities in the country. The Virtual University of Pakistan holds a Federal Charter, making its degrees recognized and accepted all over the country as well as overseas. Virtual University outreach has reached over one hundred cities. The University opened its virtual doors in 2002 and in a short span of time its outreach has reached over one hundred cities of the country with more than one hundred and ninety associated institutions providing infrastructure support to the students. Pakistani students residing overseas in several other countries of the region are also enrolled in the University's programs. CHANCELLOR'S MESSAGE Development of Higher Education is a primary condition for the socio-economic development and societal transformation. It builds the critical human capital necessary for research, innovation, growth and development across all sectors of economy. Inclusive access to higher education can thus transform our strong demographic advantage into a peaceful, modern and prosperous society. To fully benefit from the prevailing demographic reality, we need to educate our people in the shortest possible time. However, supply of qualified faculty vis-`a-vis demand is the single largest challenge in accomplishing the task without compromising the quality of education. A practical solution to the problem is the use of modem Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools to deliver education while maintaining high and internationally compatible standards of education.  Virtual University of Pakistan is the pioneer university to leverage the use of ICT in imparting the best possible education to its students all over the country including the remote areas as well as the Pakistani diaspora overseas. With its extremely flexible mode, Virtual University enables the students to manage their studies at their convenience and offers every opportunity to discover hidden talents. I feel proud that the Virtual University of Pakistan is playing its due role in the socio-economic uplift of the country and contributing towards building an educated nation. I hope that the University will continue to ensure quality of education and teaching and play an increasingly important role in improving access to Higher Education in the country. Pakistan Paindabad! Mamnoon Hussain President, Islamic Republic of Pakistan

5/ 5

Virtual University of Pakistan is the first universoty of Pakistan which is teaching its students virtually as it is obvious from its name. Some parts of classes are telecast through satellite TV channel while some part of class like experiments and exams are conducted physically. Students come at designated centres or campuses to do lab practical and take exams. This has been a very successful experience in Pakistan as it was started in 2003 for a period of three years but being so successful it is continue even after 19 years.
