Traditionally, a rigger was someone who used hoists and pulleys. In more recent times, the construction industry has expanded the term rigging to include the use of mechanical load shifting equipment, including:
Lifting,
Moving and transporting,
Positioning,
Pulling, and
Securing
There are three types of rigging licences in Australia: basic, intermediate, and advanced.
Before being allowed to undertake any form of rigging work, from working with hoists through to gin poles and shear legs, you need to have both a rigging licence (either from a Certificate III in Rigging or a certificate of attainment from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
As part of undergoing a rigging course, you will also receive a High Risk Work (HRW) Licence, which is also a requirement to have before working on potentially dangerous worksites.
It should also be noted that if you are managing a construction or worksite, you are also responsible for ensuring that all the workers have had adequate training, instruction, and information to correctly undertake rigging work.
The aim and objectives of the Stage 1 Initial Training Programme are to provide the delegate with knowledge of:
The principles of rigging,
General hazards and risks of rigging and lifting operations,
An awareness of relevant legislation and regulation,
Practice basic rigging operations following a lifting plan.
As indicated above, Stage 2 takes place during on-site/on-the-job exposure where personnel will complete workforce obligations under supervision.
Riggers are responsible for ensuring lifting operations go smoothly with minimal risk. The operation must follow the lift plan prepared by the Appointed or Competent Person. The Rigger training explains how to safely conduct lifting operations from the basics to ensure compliance with the law and protect the health and safety of all employees and of those who may be affected by their actions. The training is designed to enhance existing knowledge of rigging and lifting and to enable the individual demonstrate correlation with the safe systems of work.
This course delivers an interactive training experience designed to help students understand the requirements for personnel qualification and companies policies of lifting/rigging activities. This course is primarily for Riggers but should be useful to Supervisors devising simple rigging scheme and Tradesmen/Technician etc, who encounter lifting and handling problem during the day to day activities. The primary aim of this course is to alleviate everyday mechanical handling problems. At the end of this course, the personnel will be able to perform and conduct a safe rigging and slinging activities and understand the safety requirements of the industry.
